about
The Witness Marks debut single is a scathing portrayal of the Trump era. Amidst a folk rock cacophony, lead singer Ethan Fogus delivers observations about contemporary paradoxes of class where “hard work is its own reward / that’s why daddy paid your tuition / while my brother went to Afghanistan,” alongside the counterpoint swagger of a fiddle and piano. “We’re in This Together” is part-battle cry, and part-funerary hymnal.
The Witness Marks cut “We’re in This Together” at Columbia, South Carolina’s Jam Room with Zac Thomas. The song’s minimal overdubs captures the raw chemistry of seasoned players performing together. The Witness Marks include members of The Restoration, The Prairie Willows, and The Buzzards of Fuzz. The result is a hot band that simmers with flavors of Dylan, The Pogues, and The Clash.
The song is available at Bandcamp. All proceeds from sales of “We’re in This Together” will be donated to The Southern Poverty Law Center.
lyrics
You say we’re in this together
and we must protect our border.
So let’s wall up the U.S. of A.
ike a five-star getaway.
You say we’re in this together
in the shadow of Trump Tower.
You say we’re in this together
and hard work is its own reward.
That’s why daddy paid your tuition
while my brother went to Afghanistan.
You say we’re in this together
but you’re not even a taxpayer.
You say we’re in this together
in the name of law and order,
fire flashbangs and tear gas
clear the crowd outside Goldman Sachs.
You say we’re in this together
so get by on $8.10 an hour.
If you don’t take off your hoodie
then you get what you get from the police.
You say we’re in this together
and all lives matter.
You say we’re in this together
and you’re tired of all these bleeding hearts.
So drive down to a women’s clinic
bring your AR-15 and a fresh clip.
You say we’re in this together
so make way for the white empire.
You say we're in this together
but I can't hear you above Putin’s laughter.
